With the word ‘sports’, there arises an aura of kinetic zeal, vigour, agility and of-course, a healthy competitive spirit.
As often presumed, sports are not only a mere source of bash and business, it has a much bigger larger meaning to it, it reflects back on one’s way of life, their affections, their inspirations, their motivations.
As bob miller wisely puts it, “ everyday is a new opportunity, you can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again”
That’s the way life is, a new game agenda every sunrise.
Well, the major league games are all very customary, colloquially known around the globe, but that’s not all we have!
Earmarked from the conventional ones, we have quite a lot of games with fascinatingly weird rules. It is in fact the bizarre layout of these games that grabs the eyeballs. In different corners of the world, people have followed varying traditions and customs shaping their essence, and courtesy their historic framework of living, they have invented their own lot of interesting sports.
One of them is the wife carrying festival. It serves exactly what the name suggests. In this, the males run carrying their female contestants tied up on their backs. The couple to finish the special obstacle track in the least possible time becomes entitled to a red lettered gift.
Funnily enough, the wife to be carried may be your own, or your neighbor’s or further afield, the only constraint is for her to be above 17 years of age.
The history of the game goes back to the days of late 1800’s in Finland. That was a time of brigands and theft, they would steal food and abduct women, carrying them on their backs. Hence the practice of ‘wife stealing’ later evolved as a sport, with the idea of endurance and muscle strengthening.
Extreme ironing is another one of the ‘unusual’ sport list.
‘It is supposed to be the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt’
The contestants have to carry their ironing boards and items to an adventurously remote location, like an ice cold mountain cliff, a canoe, on top of statues, or while skiing, as extreme an environment possible.
It goes back to 1997 in the city of Leicester, England. The creative head of a knitwear factory came up with sporty idea of clubbing his work of ironing with the fun of rock climbing. Later, this guy went on to promote the game internationally and introduce it in different realms.
Another interesting yet weird sport is the world guring contest.
A gurn is basically a deliberate distortion of the facial muscles. Gurning contests date back to the days of king Henry III. It has been described as a rural english tradition held annually. The contestants have to make an effort to distort their expressions as flexibly as possible, those with the most gurning capabilities are often those with no teeth, which leaves room for more movement.
The more the possibilities of the facial distortion, the more the chances to win.
It is the quality of weirdness in these sports that sets them apart from the rest in the pool. These sports have been invented by the personal experiences of people, making them an indispensable part of their culture. The onset of the season is marked with enthusiasm, workouts and lots of entertainment.
For others in the world, it might be a little unusual, but more significantly it is all about enjoyment and laughter.
For as Charlie Chaplin puts it, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.”
These sports serve just the purpose.
