IPL Fever

With the Cricket World Cup coming to an end, ‘the’ cricketing tournament of India, the Indian Premier League is next on the cards. A total of 8 teams participating in this year’s IPL the tournament is expected to be a hit among the cricketers and the fans. Eight years in a row and still more to go, IPL is one of the major reasons of the rise of young talent not only in the domestic level but also in the international level. The talent pool that especially India has is extremely large and IPL is just the right platform for them to showcase their ability.

Seven years of exciting cricket has seen many close encounters, heartbreaks, stunning performances and even match turning moments. With Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings winning the prestigious trophy twice each Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians have won it once each. It started with eight teams, went to ten teams in a particular season with the two teams withdrawing the very next year and it remained as a tournament to be played with eight teams as it started.

IPL has its own advantages when it comes to cricket. One is that it has made the batsmen and the bowlers innovative and industrious. They have many different options in their tank and can launch anyone at any moment of time. Innovation is a great development but IPL also showed that proper cricketing shots can produce important runs and even pitching the ball in the right areas and doing the basics right can earn productive wickets. At the same time the entire ball game has changed. It has become a more batsman friendly game with the improvement in the quality of bats, shorter boundaries and innovative shots. Purists will say that cricket is losing its essence and the technicality that they hold dear but IPL has brought crowds to the stadium and given young talent a platform.

There was a time in the past when every country had a different challenge in store for the visiting team. Australians had bounce, English had swing and Indians had the challenge of spin. But with the IPL these challenges have becoming less daunting as the players become used to the different style of bowling. That has made cricket at the international level more interesting as players know each other’s tricks and trades.

Thanks to the IPL summers in India have become more interesting and comfortable. Lets see who becomes the champion this time as the entire world tunes in.
