The Essel group chief and the former IPL chairman Lalit Modi have apparently joined hands for a new cricket venture. This has sent shock waves to the governing body of cricket, the ICC and the BCCI as they believe this could actually be a rebel cricket body in the making.
The venture initiated by Essel group chief Subhash Chandra is already being compared to the World Series which was started by Kerry Packer in the 1970s. Essel group has started registering company with the names sounding much like the national cricket bodies; for instance, there has been registration of Australia Cricket Control Limited in Australia and New Zealand Cricket Limited in New Zealand. Although these registrations have been objected by the existing cricket boards, the fear among the ICC officials remains unanswered by the Essel Group. The associated nations are also on the list as Cricket Scotland has been registered in Edinburgh.
Essel Group has registered domain names such as cricketassociationofengland.co.in which has sparked uneasiness among the ICC officials. This effort is stated to be initiated in alliance with the defamed IPL chairman Lalit Modi in an attempt to clearly dislodge the ICC and establish a parallel world cricket board. The third member in this alliance is none other than Himanshu Modi, who had earlier started the rebel Indian Cricket League which is no longer in existence now. The trio can actually be a big worry for the ICC as everyone is aware about the minds of these gentlemen. Both IPL and the Champions League were the brainchild of Lalit Modi; this man thus needs no introduction. Himanshu Modi was the first man to come up with an idea of a cricket league and Subhash Chandra is a powerful man heading the Essel Group which runs news channels and sports channels in India. The sources reveal that Chandra is not the only man investing in the venture; Lalit Modi has the habit of roping in big shots for cash rich leagues and he is working well to get in a few more financers and raise fund. The Essel Group owns the Ten Sports which is the official broadcaster of cricket for 5 test playing nations; namely South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. The ICC have asked these nations to probe into the matter to know the role of the Ten Sports in making this rebel cricket body.
The sources say that the new cricket body will start with organizing domestic cricket tournaments, much like the conventional cricket bodies and then start organizing international matches. The bilateral and tri series are on the cards for this new cricket body. Well, the story doesn’t end here. The ICC also has the news that this cricket body will also be organizing the Cricket World Cup.
However, Chandra and Modi have not answered to the questions by the media. Modi tweeted “About time it happened”. Whatever happens will be interesting to see, but for now one can say that is certainly not going to be fruitful for the game of Cricket.
