Worst scandals in history of sports

Athletes are known to be called as super humans, their accomplishments are expected and their achievements in any buccaneering ways are scrutinized to no extent. Here we are going to make the list of biggest scandals in sports history. While these are not ranked, these are those five sporting scandals which immediately come to mind.

 

  1. IPL betting scandal

In the eight years since its inception, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen its fair share of controversies. However, the sixth season of the league, in 2013, threw up issues, that have since, worried the fans on this format, bringing the game much disrepute. Players were alleged to have fixed games, team owners were found to be involved in betting, cricket administrators were accused of protecting perpetrators and the highest judicial body in the country had to be summoned to fix the mess.   1. Salt lake city buys Olympics.

The 2002 Olympic winter games was a scandal involving allegations of bribery used to win the rights to host the 2002 Olympics winter games in Salt Lake City, Utah, United states. Prior to its successful bid in 1995,  he city had attempted four times to secure the games, unfortunately ending up each time.in 1998 members of the International Olympic Committee(IOC) were accused of taking bribes from the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) during the bidding process. Investigations revealed that members of the IOC received gifts during the bidding process for both the 1998 winter Olympics and 2000 Summer Olympics. These allegations resulted in expulsion of several IOC members and adoption of new IOC rules.22016272_1734501_2200

  1. Lance Armstrong Doping Allegations

Armstrong had won the Tour De France a record seven consecutive times between 1997  and 2005, Before being disqualified and being stripped from all those prizes and being banned from competitive cycling life for doping offenses by the United States Anti-Doping Agency(USADA). Armstrong had faced consistent allegations of doping but in fact had denied all those until January 2013, often claimed that he never had any positive tests out of the 600 drug tests conducted on him during his cycling career.

  1. Matching Fixing scandal by the South African Cricketing Team

The team then lead by Hansel Cronje, during Tour to India is considered as the biggest scandal of all time in cricket history. On 7 April 2000, Delhi Police had revealed a recording of the conversation between Sanjay Chawla, a representative of Indian- Betting syndicate, over match fixing allegations. Three other players Herschelle Gibbs, Nicky Boje, and Pieter Styrdom, were also implicated. This takes us back to 1996, during the third test in Kanpur; Hansel Cronje was introduced to Mukesh Gupta by Mohammed Azharuddin. Gupta gave Cronje $30,000 to persuade South Africans to lose all their wickets on the last day to lose the match. During the return tour Cronje received $50,000 from Gupta for team information.   1. FIFA world cup scandal

The soccer world took a major hit after it was discovered several officials had been arrested in a probe of corruption involving the location of 2018 and 2022 world cup. However, it took a U.S.-led investigation to finally infiltrate the Mothership, which has since started to implode, beginning with the resignation of FIFA president, Sepp Blatter. U.S authorities have further claimed that there have been transactions worth $10 million for bidding of 2018 and 2022 world cups. In fact, things have gotten so bad, that FIFA announced today that it has put the 2026 World Cup bidding process on hold. In the wake of arrests and indictments, more details have come forth, showing just how corrupt FIFA has been. And with the repeated assurance from U.S. authorities that their investigation is still ongoing, don’t expect the trickle of FIFA scandals to end any time soon.soccer-fifa
